Khadijah Muhammad was born February 14, 1942 in Chicago, IL to the late Katie Smith and W.L Bates. Khadijah was a dedicated scholar having earned her BA in education from Columbia University of Chicago. She began her teaching career at a private grade school and went on to teach at City Colleges of Chicago. For this, she was adored by many of her students throughout the years. As a young woman, she pursued a career as an actress during the 70’s as well as a passion for activism in her beloved second home of California. She dedicated her life to God and lived as a devout Muslim until her departure on March 6th 2017.
Ms. Muhammad lived an abundant, prayerful, and steadfast life. She had an unwavering love for her family, especially her grandchildren whom she often said she prayed for everyday. Her spirit was refreshingly humorous, and yet always true. Her energy was a light that filled the room wherever she went, and her wisdom served as a beacon for those around her.
During her lifetime she was blessed to have many roles which included wife, beloved mother of Solomon, David (Sonji), and the late Yusef; dearest sister of Monica Smith, late Joanna Avery (the late Luther) and late Willie Bates; cherished grandmother of Tikki, Geneva, Devon, Simone, Shawnae, Latrice, Lavonne, Solomeen, Khadija, Stephanie, Eboni, Kenya, Temple, Yusef, David, and David Jr.; fond aunt of Douglas Avery and DeLance Smith. She is sure to be remembered by a host of great grandchildren, friends, and colleagues.
Viewing on Monday, March 13th, 12:00 noon until time of prayers at 12:30 p.m. at the Muslim Community Center, 4380 N. Elston Ave., Chicago, IL 60641. Interment to follow at Bohemian National Cemetery, 5255 N. Pulaski Rd, Chicago, IL 60630.
