George H. Mazurek, born on November 26, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He leaves behind a legacy that is marked by his dedication to both family and community, as well as a profound sense of service derived from his military background and professional career.
George enjoyed a rewarding career as a dispatcher for the Chicago Fire Department, where his passion for public service shone through. Eager to learn, he initially rode his bicycle to every firehouse, taking photographs of their equipment and ensuring he became well-acquainted with each location. This thorough knowledge allowed him to excel in his role, providing support to firefighters and ensuring efficient communication during emergencies.
A loving family man, George was known as the heart and soul of his household. His affection extended to his beloved puppies, bringing joy and companionship to his life. He was also renowned for his creativity and inventiveness, often coming up with unique solutions to any problem and adeptly fixing anything that needed attention. Perhaps one of his most endearing projects was attaching a hitch to his wheelchair for better snow removal—an act he extended to his neighbors. George was a total gearhead at heart, always ready to build or rebuild any engine. His passion for cars and anything with wheels further showcased his deep commitment to hands-on problem-solving and craftsmanship. Beyond his mechanical skills, George was also deeply devoted to his Catholic faith; he spent many hours watching several Masses on television, embracing the spiritual nourishment that his faith provided.
George's charm and personality were integral to his identity. Described as stoic yet humorous, he was a sweet man who was adored by family, friends, and colleagues alike. Those who encountered him quickly recognized his strength and determination, underscored by a touch of stubbornness that made him truly unique.
An alumnus of the University of Illinois, George earned a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Design, showcasing his creative talents early on. Before embarking on his career, he served honorably in the United States Navy, beginning as a jet mechanic and later transitioning to the U.S. Marine Corps as a Religious Program Specialist. His 12-year military service was marked by pride, despite the injury that led to him becoming a paraplegic and a disabled veteran.
George Mazurek was a pioneer in family dynamics, stepping into a nurturing role that predated the popularization of 'Mr. Mom.' He took it upon himself to raise his sons from just six weeks old, allowing his wife the opportunity to return to her career—an accomplishment that exemplifies his dedication to family.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Mary E., nee Lang; his loving sons, John Henry (Kristina) and Andrew (Kristy); and his cherished grandchildren, Mia, Kalina, Kasenia and Maximus "Max". He was also a dear brother in law, uncle and friend of many. George was preceded in death by his parents, Henry J. and Evelyn P. Mazurek.
